Das Ende des Neuen Problems

Neue Moeglichkeiten in Daenemark?

Unfortunately, it has come to this after all: the Neues Problem has been served with notice to leave its premises after 10 years on Auguststrasse. The reasons for this are not easy to understand. The fact that a primary school moved into the former Kulturhaus Mitte, which in turn led to us receiving notice, is a long story that has been occupying my time since around 2010. Back in 2010, it was apparent that the school, which had previously laid claim to the Theaterhaus on Koppenplatz, now also wanted to take over Kulturhaus Mitte too. As schools always take priority over art, there was little scope for discussion. We had a lot of conversations with the Office of Cultural Affairs in order to preserve the location for exhibitions (weisser elefant, Neues Problem) and also to maintain the remainder of the cultural offerings in at least a rudimentary manner (Farbklang, music school). Everyone had to put up with sometimes significant losses in terms of space, but the Neues Problem was promised that it would be allowed to continue. Back then, I had already offered to cooperate with the school, as I regarded the fact that a school was being opened right beside two exhibition spaces as a great opportunity. Unfortunately, there was no reaction to my offer that was presented a number of times (directly too). At the end of 2010, Kulturhaus Mitte had to move out, as the school would start to operate there after the summer holidays in 2011. It was unclear what was to happen with the newly created garden, the entrances and the rights of way. It was pointed out on many occasions that the garden fulfilled an important function for local residents, patients and staff at the hospital and, last but not least, for tourists exploring the area on foot. After just two weeks, the school closed again due to problems with fire safety. In 2012, conversion work was started on a facility that had been completely restructured and renovated just a few years previously, including the establishment of the garden. On the basis of the promise by the Office of Cultural Affairs, I still felt secure despite the rumours that were circulating that the Neues Problem would disappear when school finally started again. At the end of the summer holidays in 2012, the school finally moved in again with a few classes, and the use of the garden and right of way issues were still unresolved. The construction site fence which left an opening for access after the Office of Cultural Affairs had intervened remained in place and protected the Neues Problem from the children. In early 2013, someone arranged for an inspector to come by; he disapproved of our electrical wiring and shut off the power supply. The Office of Cultural Affairs couldn t tell me who had asked for the inspection, only that they would provide for a proper electrical installation once the agreement between Cultural Affairs and the school about the space used by the Neues Problem had finally been signed. Over the course of the first half of 2013, Cultural Affairs tried to come to an agreement with the school administration; this agreement had never been in doubt and was confirmed by the responsible city official again in 2012. I tried to promote the Neues Problem among the school s development association, as the parents of the pupils were often artists or gallery owners themselves. The school places great emphasis on artistic education children s birthdays were sometimes celebrated at me collectors and some parents not only knew about the Neues Problem, but sometimes had even attended events there. Given this seemingly positive situation, I again offered to cooperate with the school and provide guided tours for children etc. but all to no avail. In June, I was informed that our contract was being cancelled and that I had to move out of the depot in Auguststrasse by the end of October. It is still unclear why. Ultimately, it seems that the school does not want to tolerate any external activities on its site. The questions of who was there first and what inconvenience we could possibly cause are irrelevant. In this way, the Neues Problem is being displaced from the city in a second wave of gentrification by the children of the artists, gallery owners and new citizens of Berlin s Mitte district.
